Field pea is the most widely adapted pulse crop in Western Australia, being suited to a wide range of fine and medium textured soils, and to both medium and low rainfall environments. Current production in Australia is approximately 400,000 tonnes. The majority of the Australian product is exported, mainly for human consumption in Asia and the Middle East and to stock feed markets in Asia and Europe. However, additional demand for the crop has risen due to the use of field pea as an alternative protein source in stock feed, both domestically and overseas.
